Exploring Places LXI: Jämsä, Finland

We keep travelling to the north of Europe. This time to Jämsä thanks to Märjo's postcard!

WHERE IS JÄMSÄ?

Jämsä is a vital and developing city in the middle of Finland, on the shores of Lake Päijänne.

JÄMSÄ IS FAMOUS FOR...
its felt boots. Established 1921 by Alex Lahtinen, Lahtiset still manufactures felt boots by hand using only 100% natural materials.

Jämsän Äijä, the Old Chap of Jämsä, a jolly wanderer from Jämsä, who is a trickster and whose history goes back over 150 years.

PLACES TO VISIT

Lake Päijänne

It is the second largest lake in Finland. The lake drains into the Gulf of Finland via the Kymi River. Until the 1940s Lake Päijänne was a major transportation channel in the Central Finland. Numerous ships transported passengers and freight between the villages and cities on the shores of Päijänne.

Himos ski resort

The Himos holiday resort originated in 1984, when Juhani Ojala and Päivi Kuokkanen founded and constructed the slopes of Himos Ski Resort.
During the past decades, Himos has gained great popularity among skiers and winter tourists thanks to its wide-ranging, high-quality services, snow-quarantee and long skiing season.

Isojärvi National Park

It covers 19 square kilometres and was established in 1982. Its scenery is fluctuating by its level and the vegetation is dominated by Scots pine and Norway spruce forests and bogs. Imprints of early human settlement and cultivation have been found in the area. The national park is located by the lake Isojärvi after which it has got its name.
