paradise, where rocky cliffs rise over the narrow lake channels that form part
of the vast labyrinthine Saimaa Lake System.

Built in 1900,
Harju pavilion is an eastern-influenced Art Nouveau building of cultural and
historical value, and an absolute must for visitors to Heinola. Harju pavilion
is located near the centre of the town.
The bird sanctuary
is Heinola's most popular visitor attraction. 8 birdhouses and the Harjulampi
pond combine to form the best bird paradise in Finland.
Heinola City
Museum provides guests with the history of the place from the late 1700s to the
1930s, bourgeois interiors of the 1800s, medals and cash collections, Anja
Juurikkala Arabia-designed objects, old Finnish glass, the museum's collections
of silver, as well as various themed exhibitions.

Museum has become known as the great different stylistic periods presented in
this exhibition.
With the Gustavian
furniture, wallpaper and use of objects, doors and windows, visitors are taken
to a unique atmosphere. The house represents the rococo and kustavilaisuutta
styles and was completed in the 1780s.
LIFESTYLE
Heinola region offers a lot to see, do and experience. Wide-ranging
activities, living market squares, museums, exhibitions and events, coffee
shops and restaurants. There are also plenty of services offered aiming to
physical and spiritual welfare.
The javelin throwing museum in Pihtipudas is one of a kind in the whole world. The museum collection includes, among other things, the javelin that was used to throw the world’s longest javelin throw and a number of Olympic, World Championship and European Championship medals from 1932 onwards.
The stone
dual-arch bridge over River Heinäjoki is located in the Pihtipudas centre. It
was completed in 1924. The Heinäjoki Bridge was a part of road E75 until 1962. In
1982, it became a museum bridge.
The small wooden
cruciform church of Pihtipudas, dating from 1783, is the oldest church in
Central Finland still in use. The master builder was Simon Silvén from
Kalajoki. The Muurasjärvi village has its own church, which was designed by
architect Esko Laitinen and completed in 1963. Furthermore, Finland’s first
Church of silence for travellers is located in Elämäjärvi, in Pihtipudas.
The Heinäjoki nature trail is located close to Pihtipudas’ centre and passes through both wilderness and built-up areas. The trail includes 2 km of duckboard trail, a lean-to, two observation towers, a pontoon bridge, wooden bridge across the River Heinäjoki, information/break shelter, toilet/store and a gate at the start. The full length of the route is 6.5 km.
