Thalia, our language assistant, has written a postcard!

Thalia Vega, our student teacher from Grand Valley University in the USA has also sent a postcard! Thalia has been with us for a month and before leaving Ourense she wanted to participate in our Postcrossing project, which she describes as "motivating, engaging and fun".

The card she’s chosen shows a cute cat right in the middle of Ribadavia’s medieval quarter, the most important Jewish quarter in Galicia given its size and its fine state of repair.

The card has already been sent to Chelyabinsk, a Russian city which was the origin of the 18th postcard received.

Next destination: Laurel, Maryland (USA)

Postcard 34 is on its way to Laurel, a small town located in the state of Maryland, in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, 5661 km away!

We hope Karin will appreciate this postcard featuring a beautiful shot of Ribadavia's medieval quartier with a sign announcing its well-known "Festa da Istoria" (History Festival)

Discover Ourense XXXI: Ribadavia

Ribadavia is a beautiful town of 6,000 inhabitants 30 minutes from Ourense.

Originally named Floravia by the famous Galician writer Otero Pedrayo, Ribadavia has been central to both Spanish and Galician history for various reasons:

- It was one of the former seats of the Kingdom of Galicia.

- Over the centuries, it has been one of the most important centres of wine production and trade. Located in the southwest of the province of Ourense, its wine area (on the right bank of the river Miño and the last course of the Avia) is considered to be the capital of the "comarca" of the Ribeiro.

- Another feature of Ribadavia is its historic Jewish connection. Its old town is the most important Jewish quarters in Galicia given its size and its fine state of repair.

Ribadavia’s Jewish quarter has been recognised by the Spanish government as an area of cultural interest: its churches of the Romantic, Gothic and Baroque periods, its convents of St Dominic and St Francis, the old bridge that crosses the River Avia and its picturesque town square, everything in Ribadavia is a must-see!
