Moscow is the capital and the largest city of Russia with 12.2 million residents within the city limits.  Moscow is situated on the banks of theMoskva River, which flows for just over 500 km (311 mi) through the East European Plain in central Russia. 49 bridges span the river and its canals within the city's limits.

Red Square

The Red Square is located in the centre of Moscow and includes some of its main landmarks. It separates the Kremlin, the former royal citadel and currently the official residence of the President of Russia, from a historic merchant quarter known as Kitai-gorod.

Located in the Red Square, Saint Basil's Cathedral was built from 1555–61 on orders from Ivan the Terrible and commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan.
