PLACES TO VISIT
Panketal is in the state of Branderburg, where we can visit many places. It holds plenty of surprises and worthwhile experiences. Many of the State’s towns provide an interesting combination of culture and nature: palaces, churches and castles.

Albert Einstein’s House and Caputh Castle

This place, in the centre of which are located Caputh Castle and Park, was already appreciated by the citizens of Berlin and Potsdam a hundred years ago. Built in 1662 and extended in 1671, it is the only castle of the Great Elector that has been preserved in the Potsdam cultural landscape.

Einsten's House
Stahnsdorf Cemetery

The Stahnsdorf southwest cemetery was opened in 1909. Here, the horticulturist Louis Meyer succeeded in creating a dignified combination of horticultural and cemetery architecture. There are 120,000 graves on the extensive site, including those of many prominent figures, such as the industrialist Werner von Siemens, the artist Heinrich Zille or the director Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. In addition, 1,172 soldiers from Great Britain and other Commonwealth countries, who died in prisoner of war camps after World War I, were buried in Stahnsdorf.

Stanhsdorf Cementery
Branderburg Gate

Branderburg Gate
The seven year’s war was won in 1770. A triumphal arch was to express the joy over this: the Brandenburg Gate was erected in the centre of Potsdam and is today the crowning start of the axis from Luisenplatz (a square in close proximity to Sanssouci Park) to Brandenburger Straße, Potsdam’s pedestrian precinct and up to St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Church. The baroque houses of Brandenburger Straße date back to the 18th century.

Discover Ourense X: Saint Martin's Cathedral

The postcard Adrian sent to Michaela from Panketal in Germany featured one of the symbols in our town: its cathedral.

Our cathedral was named after Ourense's patron saint, Saint Martin.

The Christ's Chapel (Capilla del Cristo Crucificado) was added in 1567 by Bishop San Francisco Triccio. It contains an image of Christ, which was brought in 1330 from a small church on Cape Finisterre. Christ's Chapel originally presented the figure of Christ rather than today's altar bearing Our Lady of the Pillar. The chapel owes its origin to Bishop Vasco Pérez Mariño who wished to be buried as close as possible to the figure of Christ. The chapel is decorated in flamboyant Baroque style with a Renaissance screen by Juan Bautista Celma and a canopy by Domingo de Andrade while other decorations are the work of Francisco de Castro Canseco.

Santo Cristo
The Portal of Paradise is sculptured and enriched with figures of angels and saints, while the antique cloisters were erected in 1204 by Bishop Ederonio. The 13th-century Portico of Paradise (Pórtico del Paraíso) was built by students of Master Mateo who is best known for his Pórtico de la Gloria in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Its three arches are supported by slender columns with a central mullion. The apostle St James or Santiago holds a sword reminiscent of his alleged miraculous participation in the legendary Battle of Clavijo. The original 13th-century figure was replaced in the 19th century.

Our travelling notebook is flying to Russia!

As you may remember, we are taking part in a creative writing project “Palabras da man ao corazón”, which will take us to various countries in the world. How? By means of a Travelling Notebook!!

What is a travelling notebook?
Well, it's a notebook which travels. There are six schools taking part in this chain:

Every time we receive a notebook, we will write on it and send it to Russia. From Russia it will travel Malaysia. From Malaysia it will fly to China and from China to Spain, to the Canary Islands, before coming back to us after being travelling for 8 months.

2º ESO A have been working hard and with enthusiasm on their travelling notebook for this year. They did some research on Ourense, the festivals we celebrate in our province and our school too.

The notebook is already on its way to Russia! But, if you feel curious, you can have a look at it below!
