WELCOME TO OURENSE!
Ourense. Galicia Turismo, Tugalicia.com |
Ourense is a town in the Northwest of Spain, it is the
capital of the the province of the same name in Galicia. Its population of
106,905 makes it the third largest town in Galicia after Vigo and A Coruña.
WHERE IS OURENSE?
Ourense lies in a valley situated in the south west of
Galicia. Many highway routes approach it: it takes around one hour to reach two
of Galicia's most important cities, Santiago de Compostela and Vigo.
The distances to Madrid and Barcelona from Ourense are
500km and 1050km respectively.
OURENSE IS FAMOUS FOR...
...its thermal waters. Ourense is traditionally known as
"The City of Water" because water is the element that led to the
original settlement on the territory.
Eight bridges cross the Miño river in Ourense, which in
Roman times was a gold mine. Today nothing remains of this precious metal, yet
the city still offers another treasure: thermal spring waters. They are all
over the city and many are free. The waters spring at 65°C in the very centre
of the city, in the thermal spring fountain As Burgas, which is one of the city
emblems.
Besides the place name
“Ourense” is said to be related to water. There are at least three theories
about its etimology:
Named by the Romans as the
“City of Gold” (Auriense) given the amount of gold that drew the Miño.
Deriving from Latin “aquae
urente” (scorching waters) for its spas.
Germanic derivation
“warmse” (hot Lake) in Suevic times (411-585)
