Discover Ourense XXXII: Fish Farm in O Carballiño

Postcard 38 shows O Carballiño's fish farm, situated at the end of the walk of a residential area and the Local Park, in a haven of the river Arenteiro, near a Labandeira, in a foothill of the place known as Filomeno’s Island.

The fish farm was opened in 1961 and it was dependent on the Institute for the Conservation of the Nature (ICONA) until it was transferred to the Xunta de Galicia.

Many of the trouts that are breeded in this fish farm are used in many Galician rivers.

Postcard 27 has travelled to Hohenmemmingen, Germany

Hi everyone!

Hope you have enjoyed Easter holidays and that you have recharged your batteries for the coming (and last) term!

This third term opens with a postcard sent to Germany, more specifically to Hohenmemmingen, a town located in the region of Baden-Wuerttemberg, in the southwestern part of the country, 1569 km away!

One of our secondary school students, Kirsy, has written a postcard featuring three landmarks in Carballiño, a prosperous town near Ourense of which you can find more information in this entry.

Kirsy has done some research on Hohenmemmingen and has shared her findings in the previous entry.

Discover Ourense XXVII: Three landmarks in O Carballiño

Postcard 27 (sent to Hohenmemmingen, Germany) features three landmarks in O Carballiño, a town that, as was noted in a previous entry, is located 30 kilometres from Ourense.

You can find detailed information about the first landmark, Veracruz Temple, in that very same entry.

The second emblematic place is O Carballiño is its thermal spa resort, near the Arenteiro River and surrounded by beautiful green areas. Its waters contain healing properties; they are particularly beneficial to treat digestive problems.

O Muíño das Lousas is another must-see in Carballiño. It is a water mill used long ago to grind wheat and flour.

Discover Ourense XVI: Veracruz Temple, Carballiño

Ciencia Activa students have sent a postcard to Kirov, Russia, featuring one of the most beautiful temples in the province of Ourense.

The temple of the Holy Cross is an impressive church in Carballiño, a town 30 kilometres from Ourense. Its construction was commissioned in 1942 and was the work of the architect Antonio Palacios.

Veracruz Church is a splendid example of contemporary architecture. A harmonious blend of the Byzantine, pre-Romanesque, Romanesque and Gothic styles can be appreciated in the building's design. Other points of interest are the hill-fort remains of San Cibrán de Las, the Galician country house of the Quiroga family and Santa Baia de Banga, a Romanesque gem which houses beautiful multi-coloured mural paintings (16th century).

Postcard 16 has been headed for Kirov, Russia!

The first postcard this year has been headed for Kirov, a Russian city, 4290 km away!

Ciencia Activa students have sent a postcard featuring the impressive Veracruz Church or Temple of the Holy Cross in Carballiño, a beautiful town 30 kilometres from Ourense.
